Well... We're pretty far into the summer vacation now... I had lots of plans for it too, like for example:

- Recoding this site entirely from scratch, since the code I have is kind of crappy and unprofessional... Lots of stuff sucks, like the amount of time it takes to save a post into the database, due to a crappy sorting algorithm I pulled out of my ass instead of looking for something in a discrete math book. (It's quite logical that it's crappy if I pulled it out of my ass, now that I think about it.)

- Making a GBA game. See I had this great idea, to make a game based on the Sega Genesis/PC game Starflight, basically a space exploration game where you get richer by mining planets and capturing lifeforms, uncovering artifacts and finding ruins of ancient civilization, with as an ultimate goal to leave your current solar system before the sun blows up... Also I wanted to start a project called "Everyone's game" -- to basically make a forum called Everyone's game and let everyone and anyone who comes here throw in storyline ideas, graphics, sounds, etc during the designing phase, then once the designing phase is over we come up with several scenarios/detailed plans of the game, and people vote on the best idea, and finally comes the programming part, giving birth to the best homebrewn GBA game in the world. Huhuh.

- Making a program to design music, powerful yet easy to use, you have a list of instruments and you have 4 channels on which you place the instruments, using the keyboard as a... well... keyboard... With a custom file format to start a video game music community kind of thing...

- Working for money designing a website for a t-shirt custom printing company... One of the applications would allow customers to design their own t-shirts using custom made fonts, decals and pictures they upload themselves... I worked a little on this but I've lost contact with the guy and he hasn't contacted me since... I don't know what he's doing and apparently I couldn't care less, I haven't been paid yet and it's not like I'm gonna get paid if we're not talking anymore.

- Recoding the website for the Gunbound Guild League -- That's probably my top priority, I've done a couple things, I'm supposed to let the forum usernames be reused for the league system, implement user verification, a screenshot upload system for the administrators (I'm one of the admins), and all that kind of cool shit that makes a site pleasant to visit and operate.

There's a lot of other stuff I'm forgetting here, like making GBA reviews or practicing drawing with my graphics tablet which is doing nothing but collecting dust...

Anyways we're pretty far into the summer vacation and I had all these plans that I was really looking forward to doing, and I'm realizing that I haven't actually done anything yet. I've been slacking off, downloading anime and watching it like a slob, chatting on IRC about... Nonsense, posting dumb flash games and playing them, reading funny news articles, and posting on message boards other than this place.

I've been playing Ragnarok Online a lot, leveling up RPG characters and getting the best equipment. I felt so happy when I had my lvl 124/90 Monk with a 170,000 damage Asura Strike. Yeah. I roxor. Then the server I was playing on went down last week so I proposed to host a temporary thing. That's where I realized the difference between playing a game and allowing people to play a game. It only lasted 2 days. I was getting flooded with private messages on IRC, AIM and in the game itself, flooded with the most asinine remarks and demands. Ragnarok Online players are not to be taken lightly, they want stuff and they want it now, and if they don't get it you're the biggest fucking asshole in the world. Realizing my idiocy for hosting this RO server, I pulled the plug and walked away without saying a thing. So now I'm just in Gunbound related IRC channels and message boards, but the thing is I don't really play that game anymore, I'm just... Lying around the internet not doing much besides looking at the screen and feeling bored. I actually went outside today, I went to guitar center with a friend to check out guitars and buy strings, then we came back and played mario party a bit... and it didn't bother me that other people were leveling up faster than me on RO or making me lose my top 400 ranking on gunbound...

A few months ago I was this computer science student with lots of stuff to do on the internet who was busy with a lot of stuff. Right now I'm just... Not doing anything at all... See I'm writing this post instead of working on one of these (in my opinion) great projects I outlined. They're the things I like, or would like to do, because I know I enjoy them, but for some reason, whenever I think about one of them, I start thinking about how one of them is more important than the one I feel like doing right now, so I should work on it first, but since I feel like doing that other one, I just don't do it. And here I am. On the computer not actually doing anything productive.

My brain is now empty. You may go back to your regularly scheduled activities, while I try to find myself in this mess of a summer vacation schedule.

Don't feel bad, kiwi. We all tell ourselves "Alright, it's summer. I'm going to have a loty of free time, and I'm going to make the most of it!" but of course, we never do. We just end up getting overwhelmed by the sheer amount of free time we have, and utterly lose ourselves. After spending most of the year living by the clock, we fail completely when we actually have free time.

I take pride in my free time. Since it's summer and I have nowhere to go, I try to at least have one day a week where I just do nothing. Maybe watch TV... But I don't even try to entertain myself. Play a game? But then I'd have to walk all the way to the console, find a game I wanted to play, put it in and turn it on!

What I'm saying is, don't be afraid of doing nothing. Take this time to let your brain melt into a nothing-ness sludge. Do what you feel like doing when you feel like doing it.

That's exactly what he DOESN'T want to do. He has all that stuff he needs to do, but he ends up just slothing about. It's not about enjoying his free time, it's about wasting it.

Heh. Here's my summer:

My hours at work have been severely cut back and they want to hire more people o_O
I don't want to quit because working at a theatre gets you hooked on perks, and besides, the hours are really flexible and it would be no problem to juggle two jobs for the summer.
So I decided to work on getting a second job for July and August.

I search the computer for my old resume so I can update it and I can't find the thing. I searched everywhere.
In searching for it, I find my list of references. That's when it hits me.
I've had this job for almost two years now, and I'm not in any sort of contact with anyone on the list. So even if I had my resume, I have absolutely no references.

So until I come up with some sort of easy solution to this, my solution is, I won't get a second job and use some of my free time to pursue writing (which I've put aside for a very long time).
I don't like this plan though, because it's extremely half-assed. If I didn't live with my parents I wouldn't have the slightest means of supporting myself with my measly paycheques.

Here's a bit of irony:
Kerry's Place, which is a group that has been helping me with the job process way back (they're paid by government grants so it doesn't cost me anything) was usually who I turned to for job hunting assistance.
Every second week or so, Kerry's Place would have a group where members would get together and watch movies, eat pizza, and play board games and stuff. Since just about everyone except for the employees had learning disabilities, and 80% of them fell into the category of not being capable of a normal conversation, I found myself getting less and less interested in the group. All the people I used to know had moved on, and yet I still get calls every so often asking if I want to come to group.
The person who assisted me in job hunting in the first place was Brenda. She transferred to another city, and then I got to know Alicia. Alicia was great until she got transferred. Then it was some other girl who I never really got to know. Then she got transferred. Now it's some guy called Eddie who I have never met in person.
I haven't gone to this group in over a year and I would feel like a complete turd going back and asking them for help now after I've been casually rejecting the group for so long.

Sigh.
