You guuuuys, the topic! =( =( =(

I am reconsidering the "death of 2D gaming" thing, because there seem to be rather a lot of 2D games in development, such as Yoshi's Touch & Go, some Princess Peach game, and some other ones.

However, still no word on Metroid games. I was replaying Zero Mission and Fusion, though, and I don't think it could possibly have escaped Nintendo's attention that the 2D games are still something special. I still have hope.

Edit: Hey look what I made

How's KotOR II ????

Overall, I think it's really good.
It's based off the exact same engine, so it's not that different, there are a lot of new powers and feats, and the level cap's been upped to 50 (which you'll never hit unless you power level in one particular place, so it's almost as if there isn't a cap at all). Basically it's a really beefed-up KOTOR I. Almost everything (sabers/melee/ranged/armor) is upgradeable this time around...more characters, more sidequests, more major quests...
I really like the "character influence" system they put in the game...where if you do certain things, the people in your party will like you more or less...so they'll be more (or less) willing to talk more with you one-on-one. Speaking of which, there's a lot more to talk about with your party members. It wouldn't be all that strange to have a 10-minute conversation with someone, if you explore all the dialog options...and even then, influencing them opens up more things to talk about.

What I really like is how there are more conversation options...before, as you know, there was only....

1] Light Side Answer ("Keep your credits")
2] Neutral Answer ("Thanks for the credits")
3] Dark Side Answer ("Give me more money or you're dead!")

...but now it's more like...

1] Super LS Answer ("Keep your credits")
2] Vaguely LS Answer ("I'm glad I could help, thanks for the credits")
3] Neutral Answer ("Thanks for the credits, see ya")
4] Return Question/No Real Answer ("What'll you do now?"/"I'll be going now")
5] Non-evil/Vaguely DS Answer ("[Persuade] After all that work, I think I deserve a little more")
6] Violent/Evil DS Answer ("Time to die, worm!")

The story's got a few hitches, especially further on in the game...and the game, overall, is (reportedly) rather buggy. I haven't had very many problems...occasionally (maybe once every 40-hour game), after a cutscene, the screen will fade out and not fade back in, and the graphics are sometimes a little jumpy...but that's pretty much the extent of it for me. Other people (dur, GameFAQs message board idiots) have run into a lot more glitches where the only solution is to reload an old save and hope to avoid the glitch in the future.

Overall, if you liked the first one, you should definitely pick up KOTOR II. It's basically a lot more of the same.
And hell, you get to see quite a few characters from the original, which (in my opinion) is always a bonus for sequels.

Whew...that's gotta be my longest post here, ever.
If there was something I didn't address, feel free to send me a PM about it or something.

EDIT:
Argh...I forgot to mention...that almost all the items you find during the game are completely random.
It's annoying sometimes, but I've always found that with as many shops, containers, and random drops as there are, I always have enough good items to have my crew well-equipped.

Damn...Suppo said pretty much everything I wanted to say...

I kind of lost interest in my SP after a while, and the DS isn't doing anything to get me excited about it. And whenever I have time to play games, I'm at home with my consoles anyway, so...

As for Halo 2...I dunno. The single-player was fun, but upon completing it...it seemed so horribly short, and it didn't make me want to play through again. I never play the multiplayer either, so it's gathering dust.
My X-Box still gets a lot of work with KOTORs 1 & 2, and the occasional games of Morrowind and JSRF.

DS really just doesn't make me salivate and drool... I don't know, I lost interest in handheld systems. I spend all my subway time reading or listening to music anyways so when would I actually pick it up?
As for your Xbox craze Hyena, I agree, I own one and Halo one still is a blast (I actually have it on my pc though)
Regardless I think you should think twice about getting Halo2, It's a great multiplayer game but the singleplayer mode lacks that feeling that the first game had and still has (which is why after playing it, I only felt like playing Halo all over again). Granted the graphics are great and the dual wield option was well overdue but still... I think it's more of a rental.

I like Nintendo, and I like handheld games.

That said, it's going to be a long time before I even consider getting a DS.
But hey, that's how I am with every video game system. I wait until they're not so popular and get them for cheaper.
This dates back to my first game system, the NES. My parents wouldn't get one for me so I had to save up and get one myself. I think I finally got it when SNES was just coming out. :p

Right now, I'm still considering whether or not to get an X-Box. I'll most likely get one if I get a second job and a sizable income boost that comes with it.
I didn't really have any interest in getting an X-Box except maybe to play Halo, but then Ninja Gaidan came out and it wasn't available for PS2 or Gamecube. Then Fable came out, then Halo 2 and now I'm scratching my chin.

Anyway, it sounds great, but the DS is not high on my priority list right now.
(Hmm, I really need to catch up on my Metroid collection though)

I won't get a DS for a while, but the one game that I'm anticipating wildly is Wario Ware DS.

Anyways, for as long as there is a breath in me, it will not be the end of 2D games :)

Yeah, I'm worried too that the DS could mean the end of 2D games. As much as I love 3D games, 2D games just have that nostalic charm that fill you with glee. 3D games on a 2D plane are good, but they lack the simple pleasure of a sprite-based game.

And I have played a bit of Mario 64 DS, and it rocked. I loved some of the minigames, especially the Wario one with the bomb slingshot.

Yes, GBA games definitely look better on the DS. I always thought they looked a little washed out in blue when the SP's backlight was on, but it's just horrible after playing on the DS. Blue city, USA. Anyway.

To be honest, I don't care so much if it's online or not (though the passing reference to wi-fi in this article intrigues me) but I was thinking that it would be kickass for them to make a Smash Bros. game for this fucker. The controls would have to be modified slightly but it could work. And the cloaking device could actually be useful since everyone has their own screen. Anyway, that's a separate debate.

I was talking with my brother about the end of 2D metroid thing and he thinks they won't make anymore 2D games. I am genuinely worried about this now. I'm afraid to go see if there's any solid information pointing one way or the other.

EDIT: Oh yeah and I heartily recommend Mario 64 DS as soon as you get the money. Not only does the game itself continue to kick ass (the new additions are all good) but the accompanying minigames are wow.

I don't know if it's my love for Nintendo talking, or love for handheld gaming talking, or if I unbiasedly love the console itself, but I love my DS.

Though right now, it's basically my UberGBA. The only DS games I have are the Metroid demo and Feel the Magic, and both of those have gotten old already. The games I'm really looking forward to (Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Wario Ware) don't come out for awhile, and I just don't have the money for Mario 64 DS yet. But as long as it runs my EZFA, I'm down with it.

And on the subject of playing GBA games... It might just be me, but GBA games look better on the DS. The screen seems brighter and sharper. It took awhile for me to get used to the new locations of the start/select buttons, but I like them better where they're at now. It's less aggravating to reach for the start button and bring up the menu now, especially in games like Minish Cap where you're opening it every three fucking seconds.

Stereo sound is a good thing too. Plus not to mention not needed any extra shit to plug in my headphones. Oh how I missed the solitude of gaming in class AND hearing sound.

The thing is a little bulky though. I picked up my SP the other day to reflash my EZFA, and I marveled at how tiny it seemed. But it's not actually that the DS is big (it's about the same size as the original GBA), but that the SP was so fucking small.

One thing does piss me off though. The PSP has been out for less than a week, and it's already been succesfully tunneled over the internet. But since Nintendo has a habit of not complying to general standards, tunneling the DS is still a ways off. Fucking proprietary format...

I know there's a topic right below this one, but it's OLD and anyway the conversation will be completely different now that the fucker is actually out. Also I have something specific in mind for this one. (If you care, here are my general thoughts on the system, or rather my complaints. But I do like it a lot.)

Anyway, playing the metroid prime hunters demo reminded me of something YD brought up this one time.

<YoshiDude> Hey
<YoshiDude> does DS mean the end of 2D gamingz
<MonopolyMan> the end of 2d gaming was signified by this crazy newfangled system called the "playstation"
<MonopolyMan> everything from then on was a shock from a defibrilator

It later deteriorated into a discussion of Mischief Makers on the N64, which was not conclusive proof one way or the other.

Now, I didn't take it seriously at the time, I was like "Hey they're making a sidescrolling mario game so yeah." But for some reason I don't think it's likely that they will, for example, make more 2D metroid games. I shudder and cry at the thought. Because I don't like Metroid Prime Hunters very much, and the 3D games never really reproduced the effect of the 2D games for me anyway. Um. Yeah, you get the idea, now talk about it. What will become of the second dimension?????

EDIT: the thread is now sticky because why the hell not and I have the power. =(
