I thought it was kind of about the cold blind fury of getting revenge. While your points are valid, there's only one thing I really did not like about this movie. People do not have that much blood. Blood does not gush like a hose. The big swordfight scene at the end was cool, but it would have been much cooler if it seemed real to me. The fight scene right at the beginning with the black woman, however, was awesome. I'd say, see it once the whole way through. Then see it again just for the first fight scene a few times and try to see if you can get a refund. (My theatre gives refunds for any reason if you're less than a half-hour into the movie including previews) |

SPOILER AHEAD... KINDA... But I simply hated it. Well no, I have to hand it to Tarantino because he comes up with a lot of very interesting camera angles... at times. But what I really think is that by doing this film, Tarantino is simply out of line. He got his inspiration in japanese films of the nineties where it's really popular to spill blood everywhere and cut off limbs of your enemies. There's one thing he hasn't nailed though. In Japanese films, there's a much more significant reason to this than just the fun factor and the cheesy jokes that necessarily come with it. It's the consequences of Hiroshima, now I know it has been a while but imagine growing up in a world where a lot of the grown ups you know are missing bodyparts? That's what the sixties and seventies were like in Japan. Anyway, I was even ready to pass on the unintentionnal lack of pertinence of this film but then I paid attention to the music.. which was great... But sadly, except for one or two songs they simply don't fit. My guess is he intentionnally tried to recreate the effect that the music from Pulp Fiction had... Only this time, the music is blatantly not approppriate. The worst thing about seeing this movie was that I really like Tarantino and I just couldn't understand how he was so blind in making this film. Everything just seems out of context... Even the narration is sadly a pale copy paste of what we've seen in Pulp Fiction and then again in Jackie Brown (and that second time was already a second time too much) When he first edited his film in a non-chronological order it was great because it had (almost) never been done, but now it seems he's just trying to recycle his ideas. And it doesn't work as it did in Pulp Fiction, where you found yourself wondering why John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson were suddenly wearing nothing but their underwear. However, I would still advise you to see this film even if only to know what I mean (or completely think the opposite). I mean I can't be that bad if all my friends liked it... |
